Homelessness and Substance Use in Peel with MOYO: Health and Community Services

Listen to our latest episode of Homelessness in Hiding: Our Youth Between the Cracks to discover more about how substance use in peel and how it intertwines with homelessness.

Host Mya Moniz sits down with Adam Chalcraft, the Harm Reduction Program Manager at Moyo: Health and Community Services, an organization that provides services relating to health promotion, as well as educational, social, and support services for those living with, impacted by, or at systemic risk of HIV.

Adam is an active advocate for harm reduction in Peel; in addition to his work with MOYO, he is a Co-Founder and Chair of the Peel Harm Reduction Committee and contributes to Peel’s Opiate Strategy. He joins me here to talk about Peel’s drug crisis and how it relates to homelessness, as well as explain the importance of harm reduction as a means to help people who use drugs across Peel.

Adam highlights peel’s drug crisis and how it relates to homelessness, as well as explaining the importance of harm reduction, as he explains that harm reduction is not about recovery unless someone wants it to be–more so, harm reduction from a service provider perspective is about meeting someone where they are at in their personal journey with their substance use. Adam and Mya discuss different harm reduction strategies, why and how people from all walks of life may end up using drugs, and how to change the way we as a community approach drug use.

REST Centres offers thanks to Adam for his time and presence on the podcast, as well as thanks to the team at Moyo for their continued support for those living with HIV/AIDS.
