Unleashing Confidence, Self-Motivation, and the Art of Self-Expression

My Story, My Power: Strength in Storytelling is a groundbreaking initiative by REST Centers, dedicated to fostering confidence, self-motivation, and the art of personal storytelling. This innovative program empowers youth who have experienced homelessness and housing insecurity, encouraging them to share their stories from a position of strength rather than victimhood. By providing a platform for creative expression, My Story helps young individuals process their life experiences in a sustainable, healthy manner, equipping them with the tools and skills they need to advocate for the changes they want to see in the system.

A Gracious Commitment from the Laidlaw Foundation

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the Laidlaw Foundation for their generous support, enabling the realization of this program. The Laidlaw Foundation's mission to support young people affected by the justice, education, and child welfare systems across Canada aligns perfectly with the goals of My Story. Without their unwavering support, this transformative program would not have come to fruition

Our Progress So Far

My Story is now two months into its nine-month journey, and we're excited to share our progress with you.

In the initial weeks, we had the privilege of hosting Khalil Dorival, a renowned Mental Wellness Coach, Author, Spiritual Leader, and Founder of Khalil Dorival Enterprise (KDE). Khalil conducted a series of workshops with our youth, focusing on the immense power of the mind and the importance of emotional regulation.

Following this enlightening start, we welcomed Kandice Henry, the Founder of Shining Light Youth Charity. Kandice led an impactful workshop titled "Regenerating Our Roots," which delved into the significance of understanding our history as melanated people. Her workshop involved deconstructing stereotypes, challenging prejudiced laws, and empowering our youth to reclaim their narrative from oppressive forces.

More recently, our dedicated in-house peer mentors have stepped up to translate the wisdom shared by these experts into action. Mya Moniz, REST's Peer Support Leader and My Story project coordinator, leveraged her creative educational background to emphasize the importance of narrating one's life story as an expert. She also highlighted the healing and cathartic potential of expressing life through creativity while offering valuable guidance on addressing trauma safely.

(The My Story, My Power Community Raven: an artifact from Mya’s workshop, REST youth came together to share what keeps their minds afloat amid hard times to give this bird flight.)

Alya Harvey, REST's Programs Assistant and My Story project lead, conducted a workshop on personal growth and prosperity. Her session equipped the youth with essential skills, such as practicing self-care, maintaining wellness, and advocating effectively for their needs.

The Journey Continues

My Story, My Power: Strength in Storytelling is just beginning its journey, and we invite you to stay tuned for updates on our identity, goals, and our path forward. Together with our dedicated partners and the unwavering support of the Laidlaw Foundation, we are determined to empower these incredible young individuals to make their voices heard and drive positive change within our system.
